Making a statement. I really do ship these two. Rather hard, actually. I believe there is a faint canon-ness to the relationship itself. I can see Alistair accidentally stumbling into this relationship with the awkwardness we know him so well for, and Morrigan simply begrudgingly accepting that she actually has a thing for the oaf and it’s just.. so beautiful.

Alistair as a character is about ways of hiding yourself, about finding family and losing it again, about learning to find yourself. Alistair as a love interest is about telling you how special you are and also you get to be a princess!

Well, no, there’s something of his character arc in his romance (he falls for you because you’re one of the few people in his life who treats him as an individual rather than a symbol to be protected), but I feel like it’s mostly buried under all the self-insertion bait. Bioware’s romances are always best to me in what’s not said rather than what is. When they try to bull their way into the player’s heart with roses and platitudes, I get too bored (and alienated by the appeal to estrogen, or at least what they imagine to be an appeal to estrogen) to look for that subtext.

It’s not entirely the fault of the writing, though. In large part, I’m frustrated by fandom’s unceasing worship of Alistair and his romance. There’s so little examination of his flaws and strengths as a character; it seems more like fandom just wants him to be their boyfriend. And so the other characters and romances get ignored and even hated on. All of it combines to give me the impression that Alistair is written specifically to bypass female gamers’ brains and go directly to their ovaries: a sensitive but snarky beta male who adores you and calls you special, what more could you want?

It’s not really fair to the writers, Alistair as a character, or the fans who appreciate him for more than giving the Warden a rose and making puppy eyes at her. But it makes my teeth itch. There you go.

To be honest, though I acknowledge there are huge faults in the DA2 romances (most of which I’m willing to overlook using the tried-and-true “I’m overworked and just want some crap to enjoy” excuse) I think they’re by and large better than those in DAO, which felt like rather perfunctory pandering*. The motifs used in DAO were quite well-established and applied successfully for the purposes at hand, and I can’t fault the writers for that necessarily,  for me personally it capped out at amusing as opposed to affecting. And I still want to kick Carth in the nuts. Yes, I know, I’m sorry. Nothing personal!

*As opposed to more sophisticated pandering, like successfully netting me with the prospect of being mutual “damaged goods” bros. with various individuals aesthetically out of my league.
